What is Energy Eye? Information for the Discerning Guest

What is this device in my guestroom?

Energy Eye™ is an energy management system installed in your guestroom. It works by using sensors to detect if the room is occupied or not. If you are reading this page you have probably already noticed one of those sensors. Don't be alarmed, the device you see IS NOT a camera. It is an infrared spectrum sensor commonly called a "PIR" for Passive InfraRed. You may have seen one before used in a security alarm system, perhaps even in your own home! It detects heat movement in the room and will send a signal to our system to let it know you are there. This information is not reported to any place in the hotel other than the individual system in your guestroom. It is not capable of taking any type of image, motion or still and has the sole purpose of determining room occupancy.

What if my guestroom Heating or Air Conditioning doesn't operate?

First check to see your room balcony, window or lanai door is closed completely. In some rooms the Energy Eye™ System is equipped to turn off your heating or cooling if the external door is left open for more than five (5) minutes. This function is critical because leaving those outside doors open strains the heating and cooling system causing increased failures and abnormally high electricity consumption.

If upon returning to your guestroom the temperature feels a bit warm or chilly, don't be alarmed. You should hear your heating and cooling system operating to bring the room back to your optimum comfort level shortly.

How is this going to affect my guest experience?

The Energy Eye™ System is designed to seamlessly interact with your guestroom, so that other than perhaps noticing the components, it should not alter your stay. The sole purpose of the Energy Eye™ System is to regulate the heating or air conditioning electricity consumption. In many cases it works to improve your guest experience by heating or cooling your room to the optimum level during check in!

Why don't I see this in every hotel?

Hotel energy management has become more and more popular with hotel operations as we all become more concerned about the environment and increasing electricity shortages. By using the Energy Eye™ System this hotel is helping the local utility to provide more reliable and less expensive electricity service. Believe it or not, it is cheaper for the Utility to conserve electricity than it is to create new power! By using the Energy Eye™ this hotel is helping to reduce pollution by reducing the necessity for the Utility to build new powerplants and even reduce current production. It minimizes more and more common "power brown outs" or "rolling black outs" you might be familiar with. If you happen to stay at a hotel that doesn't use an Energy Eye™ Wireless Energy Management System you should do you part by asking the manager on duty why they aren't!
